Percussion

Listen to a number of musical styles and you will hear the distinctive rhythm of percussion instruments. Percussion instruments make sounds when they are hit with something, shaken, rubbed or anything else that causes it to vibrate. There are a number of percussion instruments that are used in ensembles and musical groups. Jazz ensembles often have percussions, bass and drums, in their rhythm section. There are also other musical styles that use percussions as accents or as crisp and distinct beats that give music their character. The most popular of the percussion instruments are the drums.

Jazz groups use the drums in their rhythmic overtones while modern popular music has put the drums to the forefront of their tunes. Modern rock, hip-hop, and rap music are known to have predominant drum tunes. Drum kits are usually composed of several percussion pieces. The bass drum is the main piece with the snare drum and the tom-toms completing the set. There are generally two set ups namely the rock set up and the fusion set up with the difference being the smaller size of the fusion drums and the higher tones they produce.

The advent of rock and roll and the fame of the Beatles have spurred the popularity of the drummer along with the lead guitarist as the stars of the band. Rockers and rock groups have even increased the instrument’s popularity with their engaging and heart-pumping drum solos. More and more complex and creative drum beats are being developed by modern musicians using technological implements as electronic sound modules, tempo meters, and other percussionpersonal sound reinforcement implements.
