Drum Shells

Simply put, drums are cylindrical or bowl-shaped drum shells that are fitted on top with a drum pad that makes a sound when hit with an implement – people use drumsticks or their hands to tap the drum pad to make music. The type of the shell that is used will affect the kind of sound the drum makes. The most common materials used in making drum shells are birch, beech, mahogany, and maple. These drum shells, while providing the same tones, can provide different sound qualities.

Birch is known for its bright, crisp, and clean sound. Maple, on the other hand, used as drum shells will result in warm tones. Mahogany keeps higher frequencies and raises low pitches. Depending on the kind of music the drummer wishes to play, he can choose whichever of these drum shellshe feels best matches his style. The most common choices are the maple shells sized smaller for the jazz drummer and the bigger birch shells for the rock drummer.

The thickness of these shells also has a role in the sound that is made by drums. Typically, drum shells made of birch can have thin shells since birch can be cut into thinner plies. Drum shells are often made in different plies wrapped around each other to make the drum stronger and thicker. Alternating the grain of the shell plies will make the drum less likely to warp. The tonal quality of the drum beats are affected by these plies. The right kind of construction of these drum shells will influence the kind of music you play.
